Character Building Exercise 1

Hi there, Whisker friends!

I’m trying something new today. As you know, Whiskers of My Soul is my space to grow as a writer. I’m learning about the building blocks of storytelling—plot, theme, and of course, crafting truly remarkable characters.

I recently came across a character-building exercise on MasterClass (clicking here will take you there) and decided to give it a try. This is a very rough draft, and I plan to develop the character and details further over the course of the nine exercises. Still, I thought I’d share my first attempt with you. It was written in haste (life’s been a bit hectic lately), but I’m excited to take you along for the journey!

Character Snapshot

TV
Loves a good medical drama
Has seen every episode of Grey’s Anatomy
Even enjoys period pieces, like Call the Midwife

Movies
Romance, romance, romance!

Music
Doesn’t keep track of band or artist names
Has curated a playlist of moody songs with slow, drawn-out beats that tug at the soul
Prefers deep, resonant voices—male or female—the kind that seem to vibrate from your ears to your chest, then settle in your stomach

Magazines
Drawn to magazines with beautiful photography: homes, gardens, and natural scenery
Especially loves anything vintage

Books
Will read almost any fiction
Favors books recommended or lent by others—it removes the stress of decision-making
Sometimes chooses books by her current mood
Chooses lighter reads (quick dramas or romances) while on vacation

Podcasts
Not a huge fan of podcasts—dislikes passively listening to others speak
Occasionally listens to self-help episodes, especially if the speaker is British
