Cashiers, North Carolina

My family and I took a day trip to Cashiers, North Carolina, for a hike along the Whiteside Mountain Trail. With everyone’s busy schedules, it’s rare that the four of us can spend a few uninterrupted hours together. With our youngest getting ready to head back to college, this was the perfect chance to sneak in some quality time outdoors.

Why did we pick this spot?
a) We’d never been on this particular trail before—new adventure!
b) Higher elevation usually means cooler temperatures.
c) It’s been downright hot at home!

The trail is rated moderate in difficulty. While it’s just a two-mile loop, it packs in a steady 500-foot elevation gain and plenty of large rocks along the path. It’s not technical, but you’ll definitely get your heart rate up—especially on the climb to the top.

The views? Absolutely stunning. There are several spots along the trail where you can stop and take in jaw-dropping cliffside views. I’d love to come back in the fall or winter when the leaves are down—I can only imagine how many more vistas open up then.
It was busy when we went, and we were lucky to grab the last parking spot in the gravel lot. Parking is $3, and while there are a fair number of spaces, this is clearly a popular destination. If you’re planning a summer visit, be prepared for some company on the trail.

Would I go back?
Definitely. Next time, I’d opt for the off-season—maybe spring or fall—when it’s quieter. I’d pack a picnic and linger longer, just enjoying the views.
