Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling

Book number three brings more adventure and mayhem! Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is one of my favorite books from the seven book series. Harry and his friends are getting a little older and they aren’t so naive and innocent anymore. They have developed more awareness of the dangers surrounding the 12 year old connection between Harry and Lord Voldemort.

The book begins with Harry getting in trouble with the Dursleys, imagine that, and him running away in anger. He also performs underage magic outside of school and now is in fear of being expelled from Hogwarts. The Knight Bus arrives to save the day! Harry does make it back to Hogwarts and completes his third year of school with some rough patches, but in the end, all comes out well.

As with the first two books, this YA novel, albeit somewhat longer, is generally an easy read. Many of the same characters are front and center. There are a few new characters introduced and we get to learn about the time turner! That is an accessory I could use in my life.

My favorite character is a toss-up between Remus Lupin and Sirius Black. Professor Lupin is the third Dark Arts teacher in as many years and, no surprise, will leave at the end of the year.

Harry discovers he has a family member from the magic world, a godfather, outside of the Dursley household. This gives him much hope for his future.

As I read this book, I was reminded what an imaginative mind exists in J.K. Rowling’s head. Whether you love her or hate her, after reading her books, you can not deny this.

I highly recommend this book but do suggest you read the series in order.
