As the story begins, we find ourselves spectators in a harrowing Viking ritual in the remote Orkney Islands of Scotland. The story then quickly transports us to modern-day London and the iconic British Museum. History collides with the present as Morgan and Blake find themselves caught in a supernatural whirlwind where past and present converge.
To be honest, action-adventure supernatural thrillers aren’t usually my go-to genre. But after regularly listening to J.F. Penn’s podcast, The Creative Penn, I was curious to see if I enjoyed her books. When I saw this novella was available as a free download on her website (jfpenn.com), I downloaded it and off I went on this epic adventure. From the first page, I was hooked. A fast-paced, high-stakes story, it pulled me in and didn’t let go until the final sentence. It’s an incredibly short, quick, and enjoyable read, and it left me wanting to know more about Dr Morgan Sierra and the adventures that await her with the ARKANE agency.
Though it’s technically book five in the ARKANE series, the author assures us Day of the Vikings still works well as a standalone. In this book we get just enough backstory of our main character Morgan to be intrigued. With hints of a complex and troubled past, she has many skills from krav maga to history scholar. It left me wanting more, in the best possible way. I’m super excited because I have ordered book one in the series and plan to read all thirteen.
I loved the ending! I won’t spoil anything, but let’s just say it left me thirsty for more.
Read this book. Honestly! No matter what type of books you enjoy reading. Day of the Vikings is so well written and it delivers exactly what it promises—adrenaline, intrigue, and a taste of the extraordinary. And who knows, like me you may find yourself a new genre to add to your bookshelf!
