The Pumpkin Spice Cafe by Laurie Gilmore

This book is set in the small town of Dream Harbor, New England, just as autumn begins to settle in. With its late-season farmer’s market, fall festival, and Halloween costume contest, it makes the perfect read for September or October.

Fans of Gilmore Girls will notice many similarities to the fictional town of Stars Hollow, from the pumpkin-decked town center to the local cozy cafe’. The similarities don’t end with the setting. The colorful cast of characters is much like those from the TV series. The quirky townsfolk include an eccentric mayor and a lively group of business owners who never miss a town hall meeting.

If you love Gilmore Girls, seasonal or holiday romances, small-town charm, or Hallmark movies during the fall and Christmas seasons, this book will likely be for you!

It’s a very quick and easy read, ideal for a chilly fall weekend in which the weather keeps you indoors. Cozy up in your comfy pj’s, light a pumpkin scented candle, drink a pumpkin spice latte, or do as I did and bake a loaf of pumpkin bread to enjoy as a reading snack!

The book is predictable in a very good way, in the comforting familiarity of our favorite romance tropes with no big surprises. It is the type of book you want to finish in one sitting.

If you’ve read many of my book reviews, you know I enjoy angst with my romance and this book has it (yay!) until the satisfying resolution when the lovers finally come together. My only gripe, and I will go down with this ship, is there is too much detail. I don’t read romance novels as sex manuals, and I wish more authors left a little to the imagination.

That said, it didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment. Just don’t recommend it to someone you’d be embarrassed to hand explicit pages to!
