What the Sea Knows by J.K Divia

What the Sea Knows is a riveting story that combines equal parts Celtic folklore, romance, and mystery and mixes those ingredients together to deliver a raw, emotionally filled Irish coastal adventure. The main character Holly is flawed but extremely relatable. She mustered the courage to step away from her life’s path long enough to determine she was in need of a new direction. I cheered when she overcame her fear and followed her heart.

Immediately hooking me with the Irish coastal setting, this is one of those novels that transported me into the setting and allowed me to live vicariously through Holly. I got to experience her questioning her own decision to call off her engagement, her feelings of betrayal by her fiance’s quick rebound, and the call to start over somewhere new.

I was captivated by the ring and its representation of the lure to the coast of Ireland.

When a fiction novel prompts me to look up details I’ve read about, it results in me not only being entertained with a story, but expanding my knowledge in new ways. J.K Divia introduced me to the Selkie.

I will admit the ending threw me for a loop and I had to sit with it awhile and let it marinate in my brain. Divia was clever to anticipate the reader’s potential predictions, then leave us questioning our foreshadowing skills. It definitely was not what I expected and left me feeling satisfied all the same.
